988 offers 24/7 support. What happens in the days after the call is where the real test begins.

## What Happened

From 2014 to 2024, the U.S. suicide death rate rose 53% among Black people and 27% among Hispanic people, while American Indian and Alaska Native people had the highest rate of any group in 2024\. 988 gives anyone in crisis a 24/7 number to call, text, or chat, with Spanish-language and Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing access. But a crisis line's effectiveness for any one person also depends on local follow-up care, workforce capacity, language access, and whether the response that shows up is safe.

## What MB Is Asking

Suicide prevention starts long before a crisis call — in safe housing, economic stability, culturally responsive care, and an emergency response that doesn't create new harm. MB's signature question for this series: what was missing before the crisis, not just what happened during it.
