The Melanin Memo
February 28th. The last day of Black History Month. But our history doesn’t stop at midnight. Read what happens next
Good Afternoon , Bliss Collective.
Today is February 28th.
The last day of Black History Month.
Tomorrow, the grocery stores will take down the Martin Luther King displays. Target will clearance the Harriet Tubman t-shirts. Your kid’s school will stop teaching about the Civil Rights Movement and go back to telling them George Washington couldn’t tell a lie (he could—he owned 317 enslaved people).
Corporate America will retire their Black square profile pictures. The performative LinkedIn posts about “celebrating Black excellence” will disappear. The limited-edition collaborations will end.
And white America will exhale.
They made it through another February. They said the right things. They posted the right quotes. They attended the diversity training.
Now they can go back to normal.
But here’s what they don’t understand:
Black History Month was never for us.
We live our history every single day.
We don’t need a month to remember Harriet Tubman—we are Harriet Tubman’s wildest dreams.
We don’t need a month to honor our ancestors—we carry them in our DNA, our laughter, our resistance, our refusal to break.
We don’t need a month to celebrate Black excellence—we ARE Black excellence, 365 days a year.
Black History Month was created because this country tried to erase us from the textbooks.
Dr. Carter G. Woodson started Negro History Week in 1926—100 years ago this month—because Black children were being taught that they had no history, no contributions, no value.
He said: “If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated.”
They wanted us to forget.
So we created a month to remember.
But Bliss Collective, here’s what I need you to understand:
Black History Month is the compromise.
The real work? That happens the other 11 months.
Because March 1st is when we find out who actually meant what they said in February.
March 1st is when we see if the “allies” keep showing up.
March 1st is when corporations reveal whether diversity was a marketing campaign or a commitment.
March 1st is when we remember:
Our history didn’t start in February. And it damn sure doesn’t end there.
So today—the last day of Black History Month—I’m not writing about the past.
I’m writing about what happens next.
Because the truth is:
Every day is Black History.
Every day is our resistance.
Every day is our excellence.
Every day is our fight.
And tomorrow—March 1st—we don’t stop. We don’t rest. We don’t wait for next February.
We keep building. We keep fighting. We keep rising.
Because we are not a brand, but a blueprint.
And the blueprint says: The calendar doesn’t determine our worth. We do.
Let’s get into it. 💛
