Your home address isn’t your exposure. New mobility-tracking research shows the air you actually breathe follows you through the day and the disparity is wider by race than by income.
Air-quality guidance is built around a single, quiet assumption: that where you live is where you breathe. Your AQI alert is tied to your ZIP code, your home address, the monitor nearest your apartment. New research says that assumption is wrong for exactly the people the guidance is supposed to protect most.
A study out of MIT’s Sensible City Lab part of its “Breathing Disparity” project, published in Nature Cities combined daily mobility data from more than 500,000 anonymized users with hyperlocal air-pollution grids in the Bronx, mapped at roughly 100-by-100-meter resolution. Instead of asking “what’s the air like at your home address,” the researchers tracked what people actually breathed as they moved through a full day commute, work, errands, the walk home.
The Gap Isn’t About Income. It’s About Movement.
The finding that should stop you: Hispanic- and Black-majority communities carry significantly higher pollution exposure than the citywide average, with the sharpest disparities clustering around major road arteries the highways, bus depots, and truck routes that a home-address-only AQI reading never captures. And the disparities were larger within race and ethnicity groups than within income groups, meaning wealth alone doesn’t explain the gap. Two people with similar incomes can carry very different exposure loads depending on where their day actually takes them.
The AQI on your phone assumes your exposure ends at your front door. The people living the hardest version of this story never had that option.
What This Means in Practice
A commute along a major corridor, a shift working outside near heavy traffic, an afternoon on a street lined with idling trucks — each of these adds real exposure that a single citywide number was never built to reflect. It reframes AQI from something you check once in the morning into something that should, in theory, travel with you: different by route, different by job, different by which streets your day requires you to be on.
What Better Guidance Would Require
This kind of mobility-informed exposure mapping is still emerging science, not yet standard public health infrastructure but the direction is clear. Real guidance would mean street-level exposure data that accounts for where people actually spend their day, not just where they sleep; alerts tailored to outdoor workers and commuters on high-exposure routes; and public investment in exactly the kind of mobility-linked monitoring this research is starting to make possible.
